Lake Jocassee

Lake Jocassee is another lake owned by Duke Energy Corporation, a major utility in South Carolina. Lake Jocassee's 7,565 acres are located in a pristine mountain environment. This lake has has crystal clear water and huge depths. Its perfect for scuba diving. Around the lake, there is very little development. Most of the surrounding land is untouched by man. Devil's Fork State Park is the only park located on the lake. In addition to its scenic beauty, Jocassee also offers fisherman the opportunities to catch trout and smallmouth bass, fish species that most of the other lakes don't have. Fishing guides are also available for this lake. Hiking is a popular activity at Jocassee, because of the wilderness around the lake.

This lake has special fishing regulations that apply. Trout regulations are 5 fish limit and 15" minimum length. For more detailed state regulations click here. This link will take you to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources web site. Click on the Freshwater Fishing link.

Spotted Bass Record

On January 28th, 2001 the Greenville News reported that a new state record Spotted bass was caught in Lake Jocassee by David Preston of Tyron North Carolina. The fish was reported at 8 pounds and 5 ounces. The fish was weighed in at Hoyetts Grocery and Tackle, and the species was verified by a fisheries biologist Dan Rankin. The United States record is 9 pounds and 9 ounces caught in California. Jocassee is also the same lake the previous record spotted bass was caught in 1996. It weighed 8 pounds and 2 ounces. As of April 20th the fish has not been officially recorded in the record books.

Fish Advisory
As of April 2001 the following fish advisories from S.C.D.H.E.C. are in effect for the consumption of fish on Lake Jocassee: Only one meal a week of Spotted Bass and Largemouth Bass should be eaten. S.C.D.H.E.C. recommends these limits because testing of fish showed evidence of mercury. All other fish species in Jocassee are considered to be safe.
